Let's go to NYC.
It seems everything is happening all at once, or maybe I’ve stayed away from the city for too long. Regardless, things are happening! Things that I want to do and experience. Things that I thought maybe I could share with you.
It’s been nearly a year since my last visit to NYC, a few days of opera, museums, shopping, and an underwhelming jaunt to ridiculous haute cuisine establishment (ask me for the name). The city will always be there, but some of the events I’m dying to sink my teeth into will not. Shall we?
Les Trois Chevaux
If you’ve known me for any great length of time, you may be aware of my affinity for meat and female chefs. This restaurant has been lauded by many a publication and after getting down and dirty with her book, Butcher and Beast: Mastering the Art of Meat: A Cookbook, I am ever so eager to get to experience Angie Mar’s magic in person. This is the evergreen option, I don’t believe it’s closing anytime soon, but the sooner my gullet is placated, the better.
Jinkx Monsoon in Chicago (January 16-March 12)
Chicago is Chicago. You know what you’re getting and it’s always fun to see whatever b-lister they’ve cast have their moment to shine. This time they have the incomparably talented Jinkx Monsoon playing my favorite role, Matron Mama Morton. If you are at all familiar with Jinkx you know she is hilarious and a fantastic vocalist to say the least. This is her Broadway Debut and I think we will be seeing a whole lot more from this powerhouse in the future. Why not get in on the action early?
Sweeney Todd (February 26-onwards)
Previews are beginning in late February for the newest iteration of my favorite Sondheim show, Sweeney Todd. It’s exactly the kind of fucked up, batty fun that I can never get enough of and I’m always interested to see what twists and takes they make in this revival. Josh Groban is playing the titular role (if you are into that) and quite frankly, I think it will be fun to see him play somebody as dark and flawed as Mr. Todd.
Candace Bushnell at Cafe Carlyle (April 25-29)
My favorite place to stay in the city is the Carlyle, and this year they’ve knocked it out of the park with the programming! Candace will be pondering if there really is any sex left in the city and I think we could perhaps make a good case. It’s also just a quick jaunt to heaven via elevator ;)
Don Giovanni at the Met (May 5- June 2)
Don Giovanni was the first opera I ever saw, in Prague back in 1787. Just kidding, it wasn’t that long ago but it certainly seems like that. While some music aficionados may pooh-pooh the works of Mozart as basic, I still find them terribly entertaining and the music invigorating. This is (in my opinion) a really fun story and why not start the night out watching a playboy and then end the night acting a playboy? I promise no statues will come to life and force you to repent.
